Different Types of Interpretation Method

Most people don’t know anything about dream interpretation and don’t really care what method you use as long as you can tell them what their dreams mean. While I understand the sometimes desperate need to know, I also want to emphasize that the method used determines whether you get an accurate interpretation or not.

This field of dream interpretation seems vast and complicated, but when broken down you will find that there are really two basic ways to look at dream interpretation:  revelation coming from inside yourself or revelation coming from outside of yourself.  Confused?

Let me explain it a little further.  Most interpretations given today, even by those who consider themselves followers of God, use a method that views the dream as a message coming from within your deepest self.  While I would agree that sometimes we can have what are called “soul dreams” which are generated from our own desires, and not all dreams are messages from God, there are dreams that are messages from God.  These messages are not generated within our own psyche, but truly are given to us by God and with the aid of the Spirit of God we can understand their meaning. These types of dreams are messages that come from outside ourselves but give us some type of understanding or revelation.

Not to elaborate too broadly on this subject, I want you to be aware that there are different interpretation methods used.  One was developed and used by Sigmund Freud who believed that dreams are expressions of hidden desires usually caused by sexual issues and violence.  These hidden desires and/or beliefs which were formed in childhood are no longer acceptable to the conscious mind and so they surface in your dreams.

Another method developed by Carl Jung (student of Freud) is called Jungian method which simply takes a dream and interprets it using all the elements of the dream as an inner aspect of the dreamer. It is, in a way, the REAL you talking to yourself.

With the advent of the internet and the vast resources it offers, some use a disjointed method simply taking the elements individually, figuring out what they represent and then putting them back together.  These types of interpretations are usually inaccurate and poorly developed. The basis for these is that most, if not all, elements have a standard meaning.

The R.e.m.ember Dream Team uses what we call the Hebraic method. It is the same method used by those who interpreted dreams in the Ancient Writings called the Bible. You will see in these writings that sometimes dreams are literal messages, and sometimes they are metaphorical symbolism which when interpreted give a clear message. In none of the dreams recorded in the Ancient Writings are the elements expressions of the dreamers psyche. They are messages given from an outside source (God).

In our experience we have found that just as those who study the Ancient Writings find that it is a living document and can contain layered meanings, dreams given to us by God can sometimes be layered as well. (This subject will be covered in another article)

The Hebraic method of interpretation will not only give you an accurate interpretation of your dream, it also reinforces confidence that God knows you, cares about you, and is speaking to you.

A dream not interpreted is like a letter unopened.

For God does reveal His will; and speaks not only once, but more than once, even though men do not regard it. One may hear God's voice in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while slumbering upon their beds.

 Job 33:14-15

Five things are a sixtieth of something else; fire, honey, Sabbath, sleep, and a dream.  Fire is one-sixtieth part of Gehinnom.  Honey is one-sixtieth part of manna.  Sabbath is one-sixtieth part of the world to come.  Sleep is one-sixtieth part of death.  A dream is one-sixtieth part of prophecy.  Babylonian Talmud, Brakhot 57b

"...making your ear attentive to skillful and godly Wisdom, and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding - applying all your powers to the quest for it; yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek Wisdom as silver, and search for skillful and godly Wisdom as for hid treasures; then you will will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowlege of our omniscient God."   Proverbs 2:2-5

Remember the Talmudic teaching that advises patience for dreamers:  "One should wait the fulfillment of a good dream for as much as twenty-two years."    Babylonian Talmud,

Brakhot 55b
